Good venue, good crowd, fucken great band! The Big O overall was pretty good; well organised, Ben Lee was good, The Fratellis bored me to tears. I could have done without the mid-strength drinks (for $7!) and one drink minimum at the bar which better not catch on at festivals.

Also great recently were the Josh Pyke gigs last weekend, so good in fact we're going to the Melb gigs next weekend as well :D

Watching: Queer As Folk (thanks to a JB Hifi special)

and Underbelly

Listening: Lady of the Sunshine

Eating: M&Ms - packets are all one colour at the moment which I don't like, I keep getting blue

Counting down to: Trip to Melbourne; 3 sleeps

(source)

Trip to Bali; 16 sleeps

Craving: The Spanish Tapas Bar in the Valley YUM!

Inspired by: Flicker cuteness

(source)

(source)

i've been feeling like a fox with sad old eyes

LJ tells me that it has been 31 weeks since I updated this ... now that has got to be a record in procrastination. I don't know why I find this thing so hard to update. It's like once you leave it a little while, you've got too much to cover and it becomes too big and too hard .... so my new philosophy is short often posts (it's worth a try). I was reading about someone today who vowed to blog every day for the next one hundred days in order to dig a little bit deeper, not a bad idea but I'm not gonna kid myself by saying that I'll keep up.The theory is if you post every day it takes the pressure off to make long meaningful posts.

So one of the reasons I even wanted this was to keep track of the gigs I go to so here is a list of the gigs that I've been to lately that have been outstanding (not good or great but seriously kickarse):
The Presets @ The Tivoli (Aug 08)
Magic Dirt @ The Zoo (Aug 08)
Josh Pyke @ The Zoo (Sept 08)
Jebediah @ The Zoo (Sept 08)

Both The Presets and Jebediah are up for best gig of the year.

Gigs coming up that I'm really looking forward to:
Holly Throsby @ The Troubadour 26 Aug
Michael Franti @ The Tivoli 10 Oct
Sounds of Spring @ RNA 11 Oct
Tom Cooney Album launch @ The Troubadour 16 Oct
Bob Evans @ The Troubadour 20 Nov

Great movies I've seen recently: In Bruges, The Counterfeiters

Things that are inspiring me:
Swap-bot.com - this is the cutest idea where you send stuff (swap) with random strangers, mostly hand-made arty/crafty stuff. I think it's the sweetest idea but the more you look at the site, the more full on it looks. Like anything it can be elitist and bogged down in 'ratings'. But I am hoping that the essence of a great idea shines through. I have signed up for a mix cd swap to give it a try and I have to send to a girl in Canada and a girl in New York.

belleandboo.com - the cutest artwork on buttons and magnets, was all ready to put in a gigantic order when I realised the store was based in the UK and all the prices were in pounds :( still they list a brisbane stockist that I'm gonna sprint to check out

albumoftheweek.com.au - pretty much just a blog where some aussie kids review one album per week

fourthousand.com.au - brisbane culture stuff straight to your inbox. Great idea tho I've only seen one issue so far so too early to say if it's gonna be any good.

Listening to: Holly Throsby, Vampire Weekend & The Lighthouse Song - Josh Pyke
Eating: Family-size bags of mini M&Ms
Watching: Gilmore Girls (they have gone from guilty pleasure to scream-from-the-rooftop favourite), Flight of the Conchords & Prison Break
Loving: my peacock feathers, the warm weather, dress like a pirate day at work, making mix cds, my iphone
Hating: work and most of the people at it, the headache I've had for a week

So I survived my first week of working full time ... just. I can tell you my life is not fun at the moment. I'm not really well enough to be working full time but I'm pushing myself through it, on top of that I'm working up extra flex time to take off for the wedding (in 2 weeks) and I'm still on this ridiculous shake diet so I can fit into my dress at the wedding. The diet alone zaps all my energy and leaves me lethargic and brain dead and on top of that I'm trying to get in some serious exercise everyday after work. This all leads to sheer exhaustion. Last week was so painful, I'm really hoping this week is not going to be the same.

On the positive I am very much looking forward to having a full time pay every week. Today was my first payday (yippee!) and what was the first thing I was planning on doing? laneway tickets, guess what just sold out last week. bugger. It's not my week. Still I was looking at the timetable and 2 of the acts I most want to see; Gotye and The Presets are playing at the same time which would have sucked big time (having said that if anyone hears of a spare ticket I'm interested).

I'm almost into my bridesmaid dress but not quite, man I put on alot of weight without realising it. I've lost about 6 kgs and I'm still not in but it's specifically one spot I need to lose the weight from which makes it hard. I should be in by the wedding but this diet thing is not fun. The first week is easy and you drop 4kgs like that and think what's all the fuss about dieting, this is easy! and then everything changes. Your body adapts to the shakes and is hungry all the time and you stop losing weight. It's painful and frustrating when you starve all day and see no result. Dieting is not easy at all. I'm bound to triple my size when this is over cause I'm gonna eat everything in sight. ha

Good tele is starting again which is good news. I am loving So You Think You Can Dance. New Good News Week tonight, I'm really crossing my fingers that they don't stuff this up. I saw on the ad that Mikey Robbins is back, the Sandman better be as well.

Gigs coming up for my reference:
Thu 14th Feb - Whitley @ The Troub, $10
Sat 16th Feb - The Cat Empire, The Beautiful Girls, Blue King Brown @ Riverstage, $72.75
Sat 01 Mar - St Jeromes Laneway Festival, $87.50
Sat 01 Mar - Andrew Morris & Chris Pickering @ The Troub, $13.50
Sat 08 Mar - Cat Power @ The Tivoli, $55.60
Sun 09 Mar - Iron & Wine @ The Zoo, $45
Thu 13 Mar - Little Birdy @ The Zoo, $28
Fri 14 Mar - Midnight Juggernauts @ The Tivoli, $35

So hottest 100 time again (doesn' t that come round quickly). I had high hopes for Silverchair this year, they've never had a #1 in the countdown. So how pissed am I that they were beaten by 13 votes! ... by a song that I voted for! ugh awful. It certainly gets you thinking about the voting process. I should have only voted for songs that I would have been happy to beat Straight Lines. On top of that, it's the one year I decided to go legit and vote once, instead of from every email I have, shite what a year to bugger that up.

Sadly I didn't get to listen to much of the countdown this year. Badly timed hens party for the best mate at the same time which was very distracting (more on this later). Apart from what I've mentioned I wasn't attached to too much this year. Was a bit disappointed that Josh Pyke wasn't higher, shite that Foo Fighters was so high - who voted that song? Other than that, everything was ok.

For posterity here's the list:

My votes in bold

1 Muse Knights of Cydonia
2 Silverchair Straight Lines
3 Kings Of Leon On Call
4 John Butler Trio Better Than
5 Faker This Heart Attack
6 Foo Fighters The Pretender
7 Daft Punk Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (live)
8 Cold War Kids Hang Me Up To Dry
9 Soko I'll Kill Her
10 Panics, The Don't Fight It
11 Bluejuice Vitriol
12 Wombats, The Let's Dance To Joy Division
13 Kaiser Chiefs Ruby
14 Muscles Ice Cream
15 Powderfinger Lost And Running
16 Gyroscope Snakeskin
17 M.I.A Paper Planes
18 Presets, The My People
19 Architecture In Helsinki Heart It Races
20 Kanye West Stronger
21 Chemical Brothers The Salmon Dance
22 John Butler Trio Used To Get High
23 White Stripes Icky Thump
24 Bloc Party Hunting For Witches
25 Urthboy We Get Around
26 Hilltop Hoods Recapturing The Vibe (Restrung)
27 Operator Please Just A Song About Ping Pong
28 Silversun Pickups Lazy Eye
29 Regina Spektor Real Love (Like A Version)
30 Silverchair If You Keep Losing Sleep
31 Angus & Julia Stone Wasted
32 Kisschasy Opinions Won't Keep You Warm At Night
33 Kings Of Leon Fans
34 Feist 1234
35 Justice D.A.N.C.E
36 Architecture In Helsinki Hold Music
37 Cold War Kids Hospital Beds
38 Beautiful Girls I Thought About You
39 Cut Copy Hearts On Fire
40 Bloc Party I Still Remember
41 Modest Mouse Dashboard
42 Tegan And Sara Back In Your Head
43 Lupe Fiasco (Feat. I tried on my bridesmaid's dress this evening (the dress that was bought well over 6 months ago and is not available anymore) and it doesn't fit. Not in a ooh that's a bit tight kinda way but in a zipper is 10cm away from being done up kinda way *panics* 10cm! That seems like alot, how the hell do you put on 10cm without noticing! It's not like I carry alot of weight, how the hell do you get rid of 10cm in 3 weeks *panics more* I have no idea and there is absolutely no other option but for me to fit into that dress in three weeks time.
I am making a concerted effort to write about something straight after it actually happens ... otherwise it'll never get done. It's long and includes some dodgy pics

So Big Day Out was fabulous, I had a really, really great day. The surprising thing about this year though was how old it made me feel and it made me realise how much more of a 'grownup' I am. Mildly depressing but given my first BDO was 13 years ago, I guess it's a good thing I've grown up a little ha So with health worries (what a nana!) my plan for the day was not to see too much and just stick to the bands that I really wanted to see. This meant that I didn't see anything new at all and almost every band I caught, I had seen a million times before but I had a helluva lot of fun doing it.

Ridiculous traffic on the highway down from Brisbane meant that we only just made it in time for Josh Pyke (phew!). He did a very festival-friendly set with all the hits. It was nice to see him again in festival mode, the last few gigs have been serious headlining shows and it was nice to see him having fun. The set was great with the band and backdrop. Goldmines was standout as usual. Crowd around us was pretty good.

Next up was Gyroscope at the same stage. I have not seen this band enough live, they are so much fun! I loved their set, they have great energy and there is something really compelling about what they do. We were about half way back in the tent and the crowd was so into it! I was disappointed to have to leave their set early. Standout was Fast Girl.

It was a bit nostalgic seeing Regurgitator on the main stage of BDO. They were looking hot in all white outfits. They played a great mix of tracks including Kung Foo Sing which I always love hearing. We were in the D Barrier and the crowd wasn't bad but the kids around us were a bit too young to know much of their stuff - they weren't even singing to Kung Foo Sing ... hmmm there's that old feeling again. I had heaps of fun and seeing them reminded me that I want to buy their new album.

While we were in the D we caught the first couple of songs of the Hilltop Hoods and man these guys are fun live. They're totally not my type of music but every time I see them, I find them so engaging. I could have stayed and watched their whole set but we had to refuel and pitstop. I caught some of it from the hill and it was great.

So they were trialling a new system to get inside the D barrier and what a total nightmare! While it wasn't too hard to get in for the Gurge, by the time we went back for Grinners demand had obviously grown. The entry was at the back of the D and (I think) due to the fact that you weren't allowed to take any alcohol in, everyone had to pass through a single file walkway so security could check you. Fine in theory but the area for people to wait in was too big, you could enter on either side and there was a big waiting area in front. I believe that there was only about 3 of these walkways, so you have a group of about 100 pushing for all their worth to get through 2 or 3 very small gates. What makes it worse is that the entry has lights, red when it's full and they're not letting people in and green when they are. Also useful but because it was a new system, people didn't realise what you had to pass through, see the light turn green, assume that a big gate has opened and start pushing. In reality, it takes a long time to get people through these little gates so it creates a massive crush. Ironic considering the D barrier is there to reduce crowd crush. By the time you realise how stupid and crazy it is, you are too crushed in to go anywhere. Getting through that little gate was absolutely the most painful thing I did all day. To make things worse Shandell and I got separated, she got through before me and then the lights went red. I was about one person back from a gate, so crushed I could barely breath and completely stuck. I was panicking because the last break between green lights was 30mins and I think I would have died if I was stuck for that long but fortunately it was only about 5mins and I was so stuck in the crowd that the bouncer had to physically grab me and drag me through to get me out! Crazy.

Luckily I'd only missed about three Grinspoon songs and we got a great spot for the rest of their set. Grinners are fun full stop they are a great festival band cause every song is a punch-your-arm-in-the-air-singalong, fun fun fun. They played a good mix of old and new. Champion always goes down well. Phil was in fine form with lotsa sexy dance moves.

Since we had been through the torture of getting into the D, we weren't going anywhere. Arcade Fire were next and for some reason I found them underwhelming. I was expecting to love it, I have the last couple of albums and while they've never been on high rotation I like them. Something for me was missing. It just failed to grab my attention which is so so wrong cause all the elements were there. hmmmm don't know.

So Silverchair ... where do I start? Ok first problem, realising that the D was getting crazy full, people were taking their spot for RATM. We were surrounded by RATM fans. Second problem, RATM fans are not respectful in the slightest, in fact they are total a**holes. Third problem, silverchair played possibly the most unfestival-friendly set they could. This I don't understand, the last shows with Powderfinger were more crowd friendly sets than the BDO one (stupid). They pretty much played their latest album only, great if it was their own show not so much at a festival like BDO. This did not make the RATM fans very happy which lead to fourth problem of f**ken awful crowd response. Which in turn lead to the fifth problem ... Daniel is a masochistic little f**ker and instead of putting his head down and getting through a set that's not getting a great response, he pushes and pushes and pushes the crowd to the point of cringeworthy. He also starts f**king around with the songs. It's not out of character for him, it's a defence thing (not a good one). So you could say that it wasn't one of their finest moments. I've never really seen them excel in a festival setting and it's a shame cause they can put on seriously kickarse shows. I really hope the other shows get better for them.

Having said all that, I still really enjoyed the set - I mean it was silverchair live which is never a bad thing. I loved hearing all the new stuff and there were some beautiful moments, I could see Emotion Sickness live everyday for the rest of my life and never get sick of it. Daniel's voice was in fine form, there was a stunning version of Ana's song. The backup band was good but I think could have been used better. Daniel's latest do is white blonde which is totally new ... I thought that changing hairstyles after a breakup thing only applied to women haha Ben's gig fashion has not improved in the slightest with him keeping the tradies uniform and adding an awful towelling hat that looks like something my uncle fishes in tehe

The RATM assholes around us started a Frogstomp chant at one stage and while I will admit, Daniel wasn't doing himself any favours, WTF is wrong with these people. Where have you been for the last 13 years? Do you really need your music packaged in the easily-accessible riffs written by 15 year olds!?! No you just want something heavy but silverchair haven't done that for 10 years. One guy by me went from booing to claiming how great they were when they played Freak ... f**ken neanderthals.

Bjork was on next and her set was opened with a uniformed band marching across the front of the stage. Bjork skips out and a mass of confetti is shot into the sky. She is totally enchanting and I was sad to have to drag myself away but we had been inside the D for too long and needed water and food.

One dodgy dagwood dog later and we caught Sarah Blasko's set at the much smaller converse stage. The crowd wasn't huge being up against RATM but I enjoyed the much more laidback crowd with plenty of room to dance. Sarah seemed pleasantly surprised to see anyone there saying she had to drag herself away from Bjork and she expected 2 ppl to be there. She played a really great set. Sometimes I find her a little lacking in energy or something but it was probably one of the best shows I've seen her do and the crowd while small was very appreciative. It was lovely.

We caught the second half of Rage Against the Machine and wow what a set! I don't even think there's a word to describe the power of it. It was great seeing the crowd from afar as we were heading over because the arms in the air stretched way back up the hill. The crowd reaction was huge! Guerrilla Radio and Sleep Now in the Fire were great and naturally Killing in the Name got a massive reaction. Nothing can bring 20,000 people together like screaming 'F**k you, I won't do what you tell me' at the top of your lungs. Quite a therapeutic way to end the day. The day went far too quickly and sadly I can't say the same for the 3k walk back to the car afterwards.

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated anything. I guess life gets crazy round christmas time.

Big Day Out this weekend which is exciting, though I'm a tiny bit worried about it. I have spent the last two years recovering from the last time I went haha that might be a slight exaggeration but my health issues did start with what could have been heat stroke at BDO two years ago. It's bound to be another stinkin hot day. I'm really hoping that it's at least overcast and I think I'd prefer rain to clear skies and blazin sun. How old do I feel worrying about the weather. Not too many timetable clashes this year which is good but most of the bands I wanna see are on the main stage which sux. Not surprisingly most excited bout Silverchair and Josh Pyke.

Sufjan Stevens' gig at The Tivoli last week was incredible! I don't even think that I could put into words how good it was. There was a 10 piece band, stunning visuals, costumes, hula-hooping & the wings! I was wondering how the complex instrument-laden tracks would translate live but with the band they were phenomenal. Just as powerful were the solo songs with just a guitar or piano. The only thing that sucked about this gig was the fact that Sufjan Stevens fans are tall, really really tall and my vision was fairly badly blocked.

It's been too long, so this is the one(ish) word review of new cds and dvds:

Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, Foo Fighters - OK (they could really do better)
Era Vulgaris, Queens of the Stoneage - Very good (not their best but still has that sexy QOTSA sound that I love, shits all over Fooies new one)
Devil's Elbow, The Mess Hall - Great (love it, need to listen to it more)
X, Kylie - Fun (sounds very familiar but I'm lovin the trashy)
Entourage (season two) - Brilliant! (I'm obsessed by this show, it's perfectly cast and totally hilarious, S2 is way better than S1)
The Catherine Tate Show (season two) - Hit & miss but mainly hit (the good is gold but the bad is cringeworthy)
Across the Great Divide DVD - Brilliant (the doco is hilarious and the shows are one of the best live dvds I've seen)

And a little bit of the life stuff:
> I'm never (ever, ever) organising a hens night again ever. It has been one of the most stressful things I have ever done which is ridiculous. It's supposed to be easy and fun but it's sending me insane and to rub salt in the wound Josh Pyke announces a free gig on the same night.
> I have been offered a permanent postion at work which is good and scary. It's been years since I've worked full time and I'm not really sure if my health is up to it although I can't wait to have some money for a change. It doesn't start til next month so I've got some time to get used to the idea.

Now while the Foo Fighters at times can seem boringly commercial, I was suprised by how good they were the first time I saw them live at the BDO (some year). The last show they played at BEC was incredible and still stands out as one of the most fun gigs I've been to. Since the latest album has come out (which I don't have yet), I have been waiting for the tour announcement. This has been a good week with getting BDO tix and the Fooies announcement. Today was the presale and the website was (and still is) totally unaccessible due to the high traffic. Frustrates the hell outta me when that happens, so I'm trying and trying and trying and losing patience. I start looking around and realise that the tickets are being sold through ticketek and the page is easily accessible but you need a password to get the tickets. So the first site that I can't get to is only for a password and not even for tickets, f**k! So I keep trying and trying and outta sheer boredom I think, well these things aren't usually too hard, I wonder what ticketek does if you guess the wrong password. Take a stab and voila! straight through! Sometimes predictability is a good thing. So I have my hands on a shiny Foo Fighters ticket and I couldn't be happier. Though the gig isn't til the end of April next year which is forever away. Also, the way I'm going, noone I know will be getting a xmas present this year because I'm spending all my money on tickets (just for something new).

So gigs?
Went to Andrew Morris and Tom Cooney at The Soundlounge down the coast. Both were great, it's been ages since I've seen Moz, he's fun live and he got everyone up dancing which was good. Not a huge crowd there but still good.

Muse last week, I don't even know if I can describe how good the show was .. the sound, the lights, the setlist! The whole thing was incredible! The crowd was incredible too, everyone was going crazy. I don't love the Riverstage as a venue but the hill thing does help with being able to see, we had the best spot to see the whole spectacular stage show. Oh and sexiest piano I have ever seen.

Looks like December's gonna be really quiet for gigs, only thing pencilled in is the (always fabulous) Darren Hanlon xmas show.

Lotsa good tele-on-dvd watching lately:
1. With birthday vouchers I bought season 1 of Heroes and I am totally loving rewatching it and all the extras. There were a few episodes I missed the first time round and it's good to put them all together. Overall I love the show but the Nikki/Jessica storyline annoys me. I love Sylar and Parkman and Peter. First season was better than the second but I'm still watching.

2. I was also given a copy of the first season of Entourage. I hadn't seen any of this series and it's great, so funny. I loved it. Totally too short though and of course I wanna go out and get all the rest. Jeremy Piven's character is hilarious!

3. and of course Dawson's Creek. It has been soooo long since I've seen this show I didn't really know if I'd enjoy it again. I mean I would have been right in the target market of 16 at the time. But I can say that my taste for trashy tv hasn't lessend at all - I am loving it! So far we are two thirds of the way through season one and it is fabulous! So much stuff that I had forgotten - the whole Pacey with the teacher thing was a bit disturbing and wow Katie Holmes is a shit actor haha

4. Another dvd I was given was the Choir of Hard Knocks series that was shown last year. Why the f**k I hadn't seen it before now, I don't know. That show is so inspiring and moving. Totally had me in tears by the end of it, what a fantastic project. The very next day I went out and bought the cd and book (and if I had the money I'd be flying to Melb for their concert). It really gets you thinking about your own life and where you are headed. There is a great quote in the book from Jonathan Welch the choir director, "I feel it is the responsibility of those who can help themselves in this life to assist those that can't." The book states that sixty per cent of Australians are only two weeks away from being homeless - they just don't know it. While 60% sounds high, there's probably alot of truth in that statement.

So I'm up this morning waiting for Sufjan Stevens tickets to go on sale, now that is an exciting show! I had to choose between that and PJ Harvey cause I'm too poor for both but really there was no competition, there's no way I'm missing Sufjan Stevens. I notice that PJ isn't selling all that quickly so if I get rich sometime soon, I might do both.

So gigs....
I went to Josh Pyke at the QPAC Concert Hall at the beginning of the month. He was doing more of a special theatre show and the concert hall was great! It's so different going to a gig there. Whitley was first support and he played a really short set but he was great, I wanted him to keep playing. I bought his cd at the show but I haven't had a chance to listen to it much yet (more on that later). 78 Saab were second support and well...I wish Whitley had kept playing. We were front row centre for the show and it was so strange being up so close with nothing in your way and a crowd not closing in behind you. Also, no matter what the show is I don't like sitting. I prefer to up dancing and singing in the crowd, I felt very exposed sitting in the front row singing along. Anyway, apart from all that the show was phenomenal. Josh had all these cute set decorations and a massive backdrop that changed with the sets. It was so great. He played all my fave songs, the sound was great and he played some new ones I hadn't heard before. Yeah great show. Oh and tour snow globes - cutest merch idea!
Last weekend was The Vasco Era with The Fumes at The Zoo. I hadn't seen Vasco Era before and let's be honest we were there for The Fumes, man I love them and they were soooooo great. Although they played mainly new stuff, it was just as great and they played the main ones off Guns. Loved, loved, loved it, oh except maybe Steve's mo ... wtf is going on there! The first support The Novocaines (or Howlin' Novocaines on their cd?) weren't bad either, some stuff was meh but some of it was good. I bought their cd. The Vasco Era were incredible, I have their cd but there are some bands that are so much better live. They killed it! I loved their set and will definitely be going to their shows from now on. The only shite thing was the crowd going nuts (bad way not good way) towards the end, I thought for a second I was gonna get pushed down the stairs. I have a much greater appreciation for The Vasco Era's album now. Also, thanks to the recommendations of
gumbuoy, I bought the live cd they were selling at the show and I absolutely cannot stop listening to it. It's the best thing ever! Which is the reason that I haven't been listening to any other new cd's I have including Whitley and The Novocaines.

CDs I can tell you about is the No Man's Woman compilation which I love! Such a good mix, my faves are Josh Pyke doing Kate Bush, Whitley doing Bjork and Powderfinger's Portishead. I downloaded a charity cd put together by Natalie Portman off Itunes and it's pretty great. Most of it's new music which is good and I was suprised to find an Angus & Julia Stone song on there (The Beast) so that's pretty cool.

Gigs coming up ... I have Andrew Morris with Tom Cooney down the coast tonight which should be fab, Muse next week and there is some festival down the coast next weekend that The Fumes are playing at. I don't know much about it and I don't think there is anyone else of note playing but hell The Fumes is well worth going for.

What else has been happening, my flatmate bought me singstar for my b'day, heh she is the best but she (and the neighbours) might be regreting it after keeping everyone awake for hours the other night after a friendly pub visit (not so bad apart from the fact it was a Tues night). Man I love singstar. We have 3 discs so far and my fave is 90's. Suprising to noone my best songs are Silverchair and Nirvana.

Alright, I have my Sufjan Stevens ticket now (f**k that's exciting) so I'm off to work.

One of my incentives for having a lj is to have somewhere to write about all the gigs I go to, something to look back on cause they all get blurry (or even forgotten) over time. But I haven't been doing it which is f**ken annoying. You've got to do it straight away or you lose the feeling of it but anyway I'll give it a go... (this gets really long)

I've got to go way back to the beginning of the month. Angus and Julia Stone at the Tivoli (Oct 5) were incredible. Their performances appear so heartfelt and genuine, it's hard not to get caught up in it. I love the contradiction between the two, Julia is such an outgoing performer while Angus is more quiet and shy. I loved their set but the sold out crowd at the Tivoli made me a bit nostalgic for their Troub set, I'm never gonna see them in such an intimate space again which always made it extra special. Angus is rocking a bushman look at the moment with shaggy hair and big bushy beard but he's still hawt!
I don't know if I should talk about Magic Dirt @ Beerfest (Oct 6), mainly cause I can't remember much of it. Not my fault they were only selling beer or wine; I don't drink beer and cheap wine gets me f**ked. It was one of those crazy nights where you don't drink much but get veeeeerrry drunk. I should also say that Magic Dirt are one of (if not) my favourite all time bands. Shame then, that I can barely remember their set ... or meeting them afterwards (eep). I can't believe that I finally met them and I have absolutely no idea what happened (which could be for the best). My sober friend assures me that I wasn't anywhere near tragic but that can't be possible when that drunk surely. I could have said anything (OMG Adalita I luuuurrrrrvvvve you). I have a signed setlist and there are some photos floating around somewhere but if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have even known it happened. Suck.

The Whiskey Go Gos show @ The Globe (Oct 20) sure was memorable. The place wasn't particularly full which was a shame after their last Troub gig was quite popular and kick arse. Blackwater Fever supported, I've been wanting to catch them for ages but they were like The Fumes without anything engaging - meh. Whiskeys came on and were playing a great set. Everyone was down the front dancing and enjoying the show - I was totally loving it. We're still not sure what happened next but all of a sudden the lighting on the stage went dark, we assumed something had gone wrong, the band kept playing so we ignored it. Then the lighting/sound guy (you might recognise him, he wears a safari hat and is always at The Globe) came down and said something to the singer. The band keeps playing and the singer says this guy is trying to kick us off but we're gonna keep playing. The band don't stop so the guy runs to the side of the stage and starts to draw the curtains on the stage. No explanation or anything so the crowd starts going nuts at the guy, the band keeps playing while holding the curtains open and eventually security is called and the guys are physically kicked off the stage - with the singer being pushed right up the room and out the front door onto the pavement! It was so full on and the crowd was absolutely howling. We have no idea why it all happened, there was no indicators, the band were only half way through the set and everything looked peachy keen from where we were standing. The Globe guy was an absolute arsehole. I'm assuming that there was a reason he kicked a band out mid set but the way they treated the crowd afterwards was awful. We were just screamed at to get the hell out repeatedly and refused any explanation. Naturally this left everyone pissed off and feeling ripped off after paying for only half a set. The dick should have just told us what had happened so we wouldn't walk away being so pissed at the venue. My mate even went up to one of the band members afterwards to ask what the hell happened and he didn't know - whether that's true or not we don't know but the whole thing was pretty nasty. But like I said it was memorable and the whole crowd was out on the footpath with the band commiserating and congratulating them.

Regurgitator @ The Met was one of the best gigs I have been to in ages. For some reason cause the boys haven't been playing lately I forget how much I love them. I'd never been to The Met and it turned out to be a good gig venue, I hope they hold more shows there. Support was I Heart Hiroshima (always good) and New Pants who were a super cute band from China. I loved their set which incl everything from rock to electro pop with dance moves, they were so entertaining. Anyway, I was expecting mostly new stuff from the Gurge but the set turned out to be like a greatest hits show. It was fabulous, so much energy and I just love those boys, they're so great together. I danced my arse off the whole show and they played Kung Foo Sing & I Sucked Alot of Cock which made my night (the only thing that could have made it better would have been Blubber Boy). Love, love, loved it.

Ben Kweller played the Zoo on Wed (Oct 24). I had high expectations, his last Zoo show is one of my fave shows. Iron On supported and they were good. Ben came on and while everything was great, there was just a little bit of magic missing. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it. I love Ben Kweller so much that I love everything he does but it was like the show was a 9&half outta 10 instead of a 12. He played most of my fave tracks but he doesn't play 'Wasted & Ready' anymore which makes me a bit sad. I do love that track. The crowd wasn't great but it was still a good show.

Which brings me to Justin Timberlake @ The Ent Centre (Oct 27). Now there is not alot of pop I listen to, in fact JT and Kylie are the only pop cds that I have. I love JT's stuff especially the latest album. I have also never been to a big pop show like this one. I was expecting it to be a big party, I mean that's what this music is about isn't it? I thought it would just be great fun. The show wasn't nearly as good as I was expecting. JT is a great performer, his voice is heaps better than I ever thought it would be live and the dancing is just ... ummm ... wow! The production of the show was great; stage setup in the middle of the floor with different levels and catwalks, sheer screens that came up and down with all sorts of projections, spectacular lighting, backup singers and dancers. The whole thing was pretty huge. Because the stage was so large and the standing crowd spread all around it, it was easy to get close to the stage. We were less than 2m away from JT when he came out to our side. I've never thought he was particularly good looking but in concert he's pretty hot. So anyway, all of that was good but my problem was really the crowd and atmosphere (or complete lack of). Everyone was just standing there, there was very little dancing, even for the hits. I couldn't believe it! Like I said I thought it would be like a party dancefloor with that kind of music. We could have just been in a bad spot because other people I know that went had a really great time. The screaming factor was pretty intense and I saw some girls who looked just like they did in the Beatles footage - I thought one of them was going to faint! tehe so that was very amusing. I don't know what else to say, JT put on a good show but I can't believe that the people around me who had paid $150 to be at the show (i didn't pay that much) were just standing there. Boring!

That's alot that I haven't updated, I blame moving and since then I blame my unhealthy addiction to playing poker on facebook. That shit is seriously addictive, it's gonna turn me into a bonafide gambler.

I was happy with the ARIAs the other night. I was a bit worried about the whole Powderfinger/Silverchair thing especially since PF is headlining this tour they're doing (ridiculous). I thought that mediocrity might win the day again but not so thank god! I was so happy that the boys swept it and Josh Pyke won best Adult Contemporary album which was cool but they didn't telecast his speech! Bastards (especially as he indirectly thanks me in his speech). Gotye and Sarah Blasko wins were cool too.

Josh Pyke's QPAC show tomorrow night woohoo!

Everything is way overpriced, places are tiny or filthy or both. Open houses are flooded by people (we counted 45 not including us at one). Not a single place we have looked at would be suitable. Fortunately, there's a guy at work moving out of a place in Albion. We had a look at it and while it's not ideal, it is by far the best thing we've seen, so we went into the real estate and put in an application even though it wasn't advertised. Hopefully that means we have it, fingers crossed. So the packing & cleaning starts ... the whole moving process is so yuck.

> I unexpectedly won the first poker night I've ever been to, what a champion! I've never really played before, my brother plays and he gave me a rundown of the rules the other day but I never for a second thought I'd be any good at it. Obviously the people I was playing with weren't professionals but even so I was pretty chuffed - winning $70 helps too. Of course, now I'm hooked and I'll probably lose all my money forever more.

The music stuff

> I have got my mitts on a ga ticket to Justin Timberlake on the night of my birthday! Hell yeah! I originally decided not to get tickets cause they were too expensive but I have been sad about it ever since (and torturing myself by constantly listening to the album). Friend of the flatmate has double booked - obviously not realising the potential of the ticket offered it for half price just to get rid of it! Unbelievable, I almost feel bad, they could have got full price without trying but I don't know them so not my responsibility to point that out. I am SO excited! Now I just need to get a second one for the best mate...

> god the vma's last night were a joke. Some countries cut Britney's performance out ... not us, channel 10 actually used only that to advertise it. We are so classy. The seperate party things were weird and it pissed me off that the only one I wanted to see - the Foo Fighters one was the one they crossed to the least (poor fooies). I cannot stand Fallout Boy.

The movie/tv stuff

> Saw some good dvds on the weekend:
1. Pans Labyrinth - holy f**k is this movie brutal, brilliant but brutal. I had only heard about the fairytale aspect of the movie so I wasn't expecting it. I liked it but I find violence really hard to watch and some of it was disturbing. I totally loved all the fairytale side of it with the little girl. I would recommend it but I won't be watching it again any time soon. Watch it with a pillow to cover your eyes :D

2. Stranger Than Fiction - I loved this. Will Ferrell is suprisingly good, he's very convincing as his character. I thought Emma Thompson was brilliant. The narration scenes were very funny. I love Maggie Gyllenhaal and I loved her character in this but I didn't buy the relationship in the story. I don't know if it was just poor chemistry but they didn't strike as a couple that would really get together. This one I would really recommend.

3. Running With Scissors - this is based on the childhood of author Augusten Burroughs and what a crazy, intense childhood. Brilliant performances from Annette Bening as the schizophrenic artist mother and Dustin Hoffman as the crazy therapist she palms her kid of with. Joseph Fiennes plays a totally messed up, schizophrenic gay man and I adored him, something about that character has really stuck with me, dark but beautiful. Gwyneth Paltrow was in it but fleetingly and kind of redundantly, I could have done without her. It's nowhere near the best movie I've ever seen, something about it is kind of messy but it's endearing and the fact that it's based on someone's life makes it worth watching.

> the first episode of Prisonbreak was an absolute killer(no pun intended). I can't express how much I love this show, it just gets better and better. I'm gonna love sona. Heroes is starting this week too so TV's looking up, even Idol was suprisingly good last night. I cannot believe that a Damien Rice song was done on idol, I'm not a matt fan but he does pick suprisingly good songs. At the moment, carl's my fave and tarisai is my least fave.

It's been a while, this got kinda long...

The Music Stuff:

Caught Holly Throsby @ the Globe on Thurs night. She gets better and better every time I see her. I loved her set. She is such an endearing performer. I bought a couple of cute little comics that she has done (as back story to her albums), they're super sweet and made me love her even more. Support was a chick from the states called Stephanie Dosen who had the funniest between-song-banter that I have ever heard; part folk singer, part stand up comic. It was pure gold! I like The Globe but there is only so long that sitting on the floor is comfortable for.

Valley Fiesta was last weekend. The stage setup was definitely better than the last couple of years though sadly the lineup wasn't as good. Highlights were: Silversun Pickups, Tom Cooney, Iron On & Butterfingers. It was ridiculously packed out for Butterfingers but it's always a good thing when people come out to see live music.

This year's ARIA noms are out. Josh Pyke is nominated in 3 categories: Breakthrough Artist Album, Best Male Artist and Best Adult Contemporary Album (what the hell does that even mean?). He so should have been in Best Album category as well. It's not a bad week for him with #1 on JTV and Live at the Chapel yesterday (which was fab!). Not suprisingly Silverchair and Powderfinger are up against each other in all the big ones - Silverchair better take it out! and I don't understand the Gotye noms, surely Mixed Blood can't be better than the original album - it's just remixes. Best album - what's with that? the original sure but the remix?

New gigs coming up: Magic Dirt are playing this year's Oktoberfest! Strange gig but you can never have enough Magic Dirt, can't wait to see them again! The Hampdens are playing at The Globe next Thursday and I really wanna check them out cause I haven't seen them before and I really like what I've heard of them.

With my very last $20 I bought the new Angus & Julia Stone CD today. Only on first coupla listens but I'm lovin it. I always seem to like Angus' songs more than Julia's. First listen standouts are The Beast and Silver Coin (both Angus songs) but I do like the sentiment of Julia's song Wasted, chorus 'I'm wasted, I'm so wasted' cause that sounds like a song I would write. I got the CD/DVD edition that comes as a little book - so cute! I always like their aesthetics. I haven't watched the dvd yet but I think it's just film clips.

I cannot wait for the compilation No Man's Woman to come out. It's a 'tribute to woman in voice' with male artists/bands covering songs by female artists. I have to admit when I heard that Powderfinger were doing Glory Box by Portishead I got really scared - that is one of my all time favourite songs (and artists) and I just didn't see Powderfinger pulling it off. I was sooooo wrong. I loved their version of it! You can listen to it here. So with that and Josh Pyke doing Kate Bush, I'm sold already. I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest of it.

The non-music stuff:

We definitely have to move which is a massive pain. I'm a little excited about finding somewhere new to live but it is being outweighed by the hassle and cost of moving. We've got about four weeks til we have to be out. There seems to be plenty of places available but wow has the price of rent gone up! Places are sooo much more expensive. For the same type of place that we are living in now, we're looking at a $50-$80/week increase which is so much (especially when you work part time). I don't want to have to move much further out so I guess we're just gonna have to pay it but woe my poor wallet!

I moved to a new work building this week, which has been interesting. Everything is brand new which is nice and the building is all modern and funky. I prefer it to the last place and it's closer to home which is good. I actually walked all the way home the other day (from the Valley to Clayfield) which was shocking but good, hopefully we can keep that up. I have scored a prime position in the new building, don't know how I managed it. Desk at the end of a row with a great view out the window. Work still sux but the surroundings are nicer :)

I saw Hairspray during the week (my mum wanted to see it) and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I really thought it would suck. I loved all the costumes and old style dancing. I'm such a wannabe dancer though I was twitching my seat, wanting to get up and join in the dances, it's hilarious (and also happens while watching So You Think You Can Dance). The main chick in it was brilliant and Michelle Pfeiffer's character was hilarious. That Zac kid still annoyed me though. Enjoyed it but wouldn't rush out to see it again.

I finally got round to doing my tax return and it estimated I'm gonna get about $1000, which is ok. I really should put the money on my maxed out credit card but I just keep thinking about all the fabulous things I could spend it on; a new Ipod, Toowoomba Silverchair tickets, overdue trip to Melbourne, any number of gigs, cds and dvds. But let's face it I guess there's my moving money, how boring!

The new Prison Break promos look incredible.
> Mess Hall are touring - show is Nov 2, the night after Josh Pyke, that's gonna be a good weekend.
> Got my Ben Kweller ticket
> Dan Radcliffe was funny on Rove last night. He was so great that he made that high school musical kid look so lame in comparison.
> I'm the current queen of singstar, which is saying something, I can't sing for shit but man I love that game.

The shite stuff:
> They have withdrawn our lease renewal cause they are selling our unit! I'm pissed cause its been handled so badly. We weren't told anything about it - to the extent that what we thought was a routine inspection turned out to be a open house - I opened the door to 20 people waiting to come in - fuck! Our lease is up in a month and at this stage we have no idea if we're gonna have to move or not. I REALLY don't want to have to move, I'm really attached to this place and it just suits us perfectly. Also moving is gonna cost us too much!
> Our letterbox is still a pile of rubble and I am still receiving bills; there's no upside.
> Gyroscope are playing the same night as Josh Pyke - suck!
> Idol this year is pretty disappointing, the girls are going to get chewed out so quickly.
> Work full stop

I was gonna do a big update today but facebook is eating my brain. I blame my flatmate, she got me into the place and she brings out my competitive streak. We both had the day off today so we have been doing nothing but playing facebook all day; pirating, scrabbling, quizzing, it's super addictive. She's on study break so I'm enabling her procrastinating. The only break I had today was a trip to JB Hifi - to further help the flatmate procrastinate. I was so proud, I made it out of JBs without buying anything for myself. The funny thing was we both walked out after secretly buying each other stuff, she's so cute. She bought me Almost Famous on dvd, it's my all time favourite movie but I only had a dodge copy on video. I'm looking forward to watching the extras even tho they're limited. I bought her the Angus & Julia Stone double EP cause I'm attempting a bit of musical education.

Friday's Silverchair/ Powderfinger gig was kickarse! I'll write more about it later but for now, here's some dodgy pics:

Sadly, I couldn't get any good shots of Ben or Chris:

and one of DZ + mo

Which reminds me to ask the question - I don't know if anyone on my extensive friends list would know this but I've gotta ask. Video files from my digital camera are too big to upload onto youtube. What do I need to do (and/or what program do I need to use) to shrink the file down? Any ideas?

Well done Kochie - 'coming up we ask the question has artistic freedom gone too far?' Hello freedom ppl, maybe we should lock the artwork up in a detention centre for a while before it's released to the public.

Which reminds me about the fuss that is being made over Californication. So unnecessary, I read a detailed article about how the show proves that we have become a morally bankrupt society. Seriously?? I must be lacking in morals cause I didn't have a problem with it. Though maybe it's the type of morals they're talking about, religion was mentioned, nuff said. All I wanna know is if Californication was a word before the Chilli Peppers used it?

I don't know if Wentworth Miller and Luke McFarlane are really together but man they make a hawt couple.

Heroes fandom is going nuts at the moment with all the world tour stuff.

Random bits and pieces:

I've been enjoying Idol this season, though I'm not particularly lovin the people getting through. The level of the guys is good this year but I'm so meh about the girls. I was suprised that Jocob got through. I really liked him when he was on XFactor but let's face it - their standard was a lot lower and I kinda feel like well you've had your chance at this. I really hope Husny gets another chance, I know that at times he was cringeworthy but what can I say, I'm a sucker for a boy in eye makeup (disturbingly proven by the fact that I am loving daniel johns' latest black eye fetish).

Seeing an ad just reminded me ... I can't stand that run of drug ads that are on at the moment and surely they're not going to stop anyone.

My latest tv streaming has been Miami Ink and wow am I loving it! Naturally now I'm very intriqued by the idea of getting a tattoo. I know what I'd get but I don't know where but most importantly I don't know how I'd really handle the pain, I am a mega-wuss. I love all the boys in Miami Ink but Ami can be a total asshole, I don't know why the others put up with him. He comes across as the stereotypical skinhead tattooed guy waaaay agressive. On the other side of that is Chris who is just a total sweetheart, I want him to do my tattoo ;)

Someone took out our letterbox this morning, and given the size of it I am amazed at the damage they've done. We live in a unit block of 12 with a massive brick letterbox. Our block is in a shite position - on a main road, on a slight bend that has lights just after it. I have a feeling that the guy came flying round the corner, found the traffic stopped at the lights and veered directly into our letterbox! What an idiot, he must have hit it directly, right in the middle and hard! It is smashed to smithereens and now the mailman has nothing but a pile of rubble to put our letters in. I'm quite worried about it, given that this is going to be an insurance matter and god knows how long that is going to take.

Haven't received the Franti refund yet. I'm definitely gonna spend it on a Kweller ticket, I was tossing up between that and The Cat Empire but their Friday show that most of my friends are going to has sold out. I think I'll just wait and see how the cash goes and maybe catch the Thursday show.

I am having severe gig withdrawals at the moment, constant illness has kept me at home. Fortunately I have a cracker coming up this weekend, I can't wait to see Silverchair again but I'm pissed that they will be playing before Powderfinger. I know home town crowd and all that but PF are so bland compared SC. I got excited when I heard that Andrew Morris is supporting but that's the Saturday show dammit. We've got Blue King Brown which is ok but not as good.
